Even if you dive every day the ocean can still surprise you. At the end of last year, divers off TCI were surprised to see something surprising: a ‘spotted’ nurse shark!
Nurse sharks are not spotted. At least, not usually. A genetic condition called ‘leucism’ that causes a lack of pigment is the culprit. This mutation is known as ‘pied’, ‘piebald’, or ‘partial albinism’, and has been seen in sharks before.
